🛑⚖️ Les raisons de la suspension de la vente de la récade du roi Béhanzin 🛑⚖️
La récade, sceptre traditionnel ayant appartenu au roi Béhanzin, ancien souverain du royaume du Dahomey, ne sera finalement pas mise aux enchères à Paris. Prévue dans le catalogue d’une vente organisée par la maison Millon le 20 décembre 2024, l’attribut royal a été retiré de manière inattendue sous la pression des autorités béninoises et françaises.
Selon des sources officielles, c’est un conseiller de la Présidence béninoise qui a alerté en urgence le Service des musées de France pour empêcher la vente de cet objet symbolique. En réponse, le ministère français de la Culture a contacté la maison Millon, demandant le retrait immédiat de la récade du catalogue. Cette intervention marque une nouvelle étape dans la lutte pour la restitution des trésors culturels africains spoliés.
Marie-Cécile Zinsou, présidente de la Fondation Zinsou, a réagi sur les ondes de RFI, dénonçant le statut de la récade. Selon elle, cet objet n’a pas été « offert » aux forces coloniales françaises, mais « pillé » lors de l’invasion du Dahomey à la fin du XIXᵉ siècle. Elle a appelé à sa restitution, évoquant le précédent de 2021, où une vingtaine d’œuvres culturelles béninoises avaient été restituées par la France.
Cette affaire soulève à nouveau le débat sur la provenance des biens culturels présents dans les musées et sur le marché de l’art en Europe. Pour le Bénin, la récade du roi Béhanzin représente un symbole fort de souveraineté et d’identité nationale, renforçant l’importance de sa restitution.
Alors que les discussions sur la restitution des trésors africains s’intensifient, la suspension de cette vente est perçue comme une victoire morale pour le Bénin et un signal fort pour les autres nations engagées dans des démarches similaires.
