Mathieu Mabin, correspondant depuis Washington, explique pourquoi de nombreux Latinos, autrefois majoritairement démocrates, sont de plus en plus tentés par un vote en faveur de Donald Trump. Plusieurs raisons expliquent cette tendance, notamment une volonté d’intégration rapide au rêve américain. Pour beaucoup de Latinos de première génération, être “totalement américain” signifie souvent épouser les valeurs conservatrices, traditionnellement associées au parti républicain.

La majorité des Latinos étant catholiques, des questions telles que l’avortement renforcent leur affinité avec le parti républicain, qui défend des positions plus proches de celles de l’Église. De plus, pour les Cubains, Honduriens et Salvadoriens, ayant fui des régimes collectivistes ou communistes, le rejet de tout système socialisant est fort. Donald Trump, habilement, exploite ce rejet en attirant ces électeurs avec des discours sur la liberté économique et l’anti-communisme.

Bien que ces communautés aient historiquement penché en faveur des démocrates, elles sont de plus en plus séduites par Trump, en particulier dans des États clés comme la Floride. Alors que l’élection se rapproche, la bataille pour chaque voix devient cruciale et les candidats redoublent d’efforts pour séduire les indécis. Cette stratégie de dernière minute montre à quel point l’élection reste serrée, avec un grand nombre d’électeurs encore indécis.
