Depuis quelques semaines, Patrice Talon, président du Bénin, se fait de plus en plus visible dans l’actualité. Après avoir été longtemps critiqué pendant 7 ans par l’opposition et certains médias locaux, pour son manque de popularité et son style autoritaire, le chef de l’État semble vouloir changer d’image.
Deux événements récents ont particulièrement marqué les esprits. Le 28 décembre 2023, Patrice Talon a assisté au festival WeLove Eya, une manifestation culturelle qui célèbre la culture africaine. Il a notamment participé à un concert, où il a dansé avec le public.
Le 9 janvier 2024, le président Talon a fait une apparition remarquée à la fête du Vodun, une religion traditionnelle très importante au Bénin. Il s’est incliné devant les Egungun, des dignitaires du culte, un geste d’humilité qui a été salué par la foule. Ces apparitions publiques, souvent accompagnées de gestes populaires, ont suscité des interrogations. S’agit-il d’une nouvelle stratégie de Patrice Talon pour se préparer à sa succession ?
Il est possible que le président Talon souhaite se montrer plus accessible et plus proche des populations à l’approche de la fin de son mandat. En effet, il est bien conscient que son bilan est controversé sur le plan social. Il a été critiqué pour sa lutte contre la corruption, qui a conduit à l’emprisonnement de plusieurs de ses proches, et pour sa politique économique, qui a creusé les inégalités selon une partie de l’opposition.
Par ses apparitions publiques, Patrice Talon pourrait donc chercher à redorer son blason et à se placer en position de force pour désigner son successeur. Cependant, il est également possible que ces apparitions soient simplement le reflet d’une évolution personnelle du président Talon. Il a toujours été un homme secret et réservé, mais il semble désormais plus ouvert et plus à l’écoute des autres.
Quoi qu’il en soit, les apparitions de Patrice Talon sont un signe que le président béninois est bien décidé à jouer un rôle actif dans la vie politique du pays dans les années à venir.
