Marie-Cécile Zinsou, figure emblématique de la promotion de l’art africain, a été reconduite à la présidence du Conseil d’administration de l’Académie de France à Rome, communément appelée Villa Médicis, pour une durée de trois ans. La décision a été officialisée par un décret signé le 31 octobre 2024 par le président de la République française.

Zinsou, une Franco-béninoise passionnée par la culture et les arts, occupe ce poste depuis plusieurs années. Elle a su insuffler une dynamique nouvelle à l’institution grâce à son engagement pour la diversité artistique et son expertise reconnue à l’international. Cette reconduction vient saluer son travail à la tête de la Villa Médicis, un lieu historique fondé en 1666 sous Louis XIV et destiné à la création artistique. Chaque année, l’académie accueille des artistes en résidence pour des projets innovants dans divers domaines comme la peinture, la sculpture, le cinéma, ou encore la littérature.

Un engagement profond pour l’art africain

En plus de ses responsabilités à Rome, Marie-Cécile Zinsou est surtout connue pour son engagement inébranlable en faveur de l’art africain contemporain à travers la Fondation Zinsou, créée en 2005 au Bénin. La mission de cette fondation est claire : rendre l’art accessible à un large public tout en faisant découvrir la richesse et la diversité de la création artistique africaine. Sous sa direction, la Fondation Zinsou est devenue une référence incontournable pour les amateurs d’art africain, avec de nombreuses expositions et projets éducatifs.

Une vision artistique internationale

Cette reconduction s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’approche artistique inclusive et ouverte que prône Marie-Cécile Zinsou. Elle a toujours œuvré pour la reconnaissance des artistes africains sur la scène internationale, et sa position au sein de l’Académie de France à Rome lui permet de tisser des liens entre les créateurs d’horizons divers.

Son rôle à la Villa Médicis lui offre une plateforme unique pour encourager la collaboration entre artistes et cultures, dans un lieu chargé d’histoire. Alors que l’académie se prépare à accueillir une nouvelle génération d’artistes en 2025, Marie-Cécile Zinsou continuera de jouer un rôle clé dans la mise en avant de projets novateurs et la promotion de la diversité culturelle.
