Le drame s’est joué en quelques minutes à Sèmè-Kraké, ville frontalière avec le Nigéria. Un incendie ravageur s’est déclaré dans l’un des principaux entrepôts de stockage d’essence de contrebande, faisant 34 morts et 20 blessés, dont certains sont dans un état critique. Les murs noircis de l’entrepôt sont tout ce qui reste de cette tragédie, avec une enquête en cours pour déterminer les causes exactes de cet incident.
Les témoignages des résidents sont déchirants. “Il y avait du monde dans l’entrepôt. J’ai perdu quatre membres de ma famille dans cet incendie”, confie un habitant, soulignant l’ampleur du drame. L’entrepôt en question était d’une importance capitale pour Sèmè-Kraké, situé à 40 km de Cotonou, car il abritait de l’essence importée illégalement du Nigéria voisin – une pratique courante au Bénin.
La réalité économique sous-jacente à cette tragédie est celle du commerce de l’essence de contrebande. Depuis les années 1980, l’essence nigériane surnommée “Kpayo” est omniprésente au Bénin, vendue le long des routes par de nombreux vendeurs informels. Malgré l’augmentation des prix suite à la suppression des subventions au Nigéria, cette activité illégale persiste.
Les accidents liés au stockage et au transport précaire de cette essence sont malheureusement fréquents au Bénin. Mais l’incendie de Sèmè-Kraké a été particulièrement dévastateur. Les niveaux de brûlures chez certains blessés couvrent jusqu’à 100% de leur surface corporelle, illustrant la gravité des blessures.
Depuis 2018, le gouvernement béninois tente de réguler ce secteur. Des initiatives pour la réinsertion des acteurs impliqués ont été mises en place, avec 5000 trafiquants ayant bénéficié d’une formation, par exemple dans le textile, pour changer d’activité. Toutefois, ces mesures suffiront-elles pour mettre un terme à ce commerce dangereux ?
