Le Nigeria se prépare à déployer un nouveau vaccin contre le paludisme

Le Nigeria est sur le point de devenir l’un des premiers pays au monde à déployer le vaccin contre le paludisme R21. Développé par des scientifiques de l’Université d’Oxford, ce vaccin représente une avancée majeure dans la lutte contre cette maladie qui demeure un problème de santé publique critique dans le pays. Plus de 846 000 doses du vaccin ont été reçues, grâce à un partenariat avec l’Alliance internationale du vaccin, et seront administrées gratuitement.

Un enjeu crucial pour la santé publique

Le paludisme touche environ 97 % de la population nigériane et reste l’une des principales causes de décès dans le pays, représentant à lui seul 31 % des décès mondiaux dus à cette maladie, selon le ministère de la Santé. La maladie, propagée par les piqûres de moustiques qui se reproduisent principalement pendant la saison des pluies, est particulièrement virulente au Nigeria, ce qui fait du déploiement de ce vaccin une étape cruciale dans la lutte contre le fléau.

Le ministre de la Santé a salué l’arrivée du vaccin comme une étape importante dans les efforts d’élimination du paludisme. Les premières doses seront administrées lors d’un programme pilote dans deux États où la charge de paludisme est la plus élevée. Ce test permettra d’évaluer l’efficacité du vaccin avant un déploiement à l’échelle nationale.

Produit par l’Institut du sérum de l’Inde, le vaccin R21 est le fruit d’une collaboration internationale pour combattre cette maladie. Le Nigeria, avec son taux de mortalité élevé dû au paludisme, est en première ligne pour bénéficier de cette avancée scientifique. Le succès du programme pourrait avoir des répercussions majeures, non seulement pour le pays, mais également pour d’autres nations africaines touchées par le paludisme.
