Gaston Dossouhoui, le ministre de l’Agriculture, de l’Élevage et de la Pêche du Bénin, a commencé une tournée majeure de sensibilisation des acteurs agricoles, en particulier des producteurs de coton, le jeudi 22 juin 2023. C’est dans des villes clés comme Banikoara, Kandi, Natitingou, Dassa et Djidja que le ministre déploie ses efforts pour redynamiser la production de coton.
Cet effort fait suite à une baisse de la production de coton lors de la campagne 2022-2023. Pourtant, le gouvernement et l’Association Interprofessionnelle du Coton (AIC) sont déterminés à relancer la production de coton. À Banikoara, le ministre Dossouhoui a reçu des assurances de l’engagement continu des producteurs de coton, promettant de maintenir Banikoara en tant que principal producteur de coton au Bénin.
C’est dans cette salle de réunion de l’Union Communale des Coopératives Villageoises des Producteurs de Coton de Banikoara que Tamou Gani Badou, président de la Fédération Nationale des Coopératives Villageoises des Producteurs de Coton (Fn-Cvpc), a assuré au ministre de l’engagement des producteurs de coton. En réponse, le ministre Dossouhoui a annoncé un prix pour l’arrondissement qui obtiendra le meilleur rendement à l’hectare, dans une tentative d’encourager une production de coton accrue. Cela fait partie des efforts du gouvernement pour contrer les défis, tels que l’émergence d’une nouvelle espèce de jassides nuisibles au cotonnier, l’adaptation à un nouvel engrais, le Ssp, et diverses campagnes contre la culture du cotonnier.
Au cours de cette tournée, le ministre et sa délégation insisteront sur l’importance de suivre scrupuleusement les itinéraires techniques pour une bonne production de coton. Cette initiative pourrait signaler une nouvelle ère de prospérité pour le secteur cotonnier au Bénin, qui est un pilier essentiel de l’économie agricole du pays.
